Title: It Only Hurts When I Think About Kirk, Gurney, Carswell, and Cramer
Medium: Ink and graphite on paper
Size: 11 ½ in. x 22 in.
Description/Context: A stand-alone editorial cartoon noting the Florida Republican Party (Grand Old Party) elephant’s stomach ache with all the turmoil of the race for the U. S. Senate seat from Florida. Bill Cramer announced his candidacy and he had run earlier in 1968 against Ed Gurney. Cramer withdrew from that campaign, supposedly gaining a pledge from the successful Gurney of future support when Cramer sought the other Florida Senate seat. On April 8, 1970, the U. S. Senate rejected Nixon’s nomination of Judge George Harrold Carswell for the United States Supreme Court and Carswell announced he would run for the Florida Senate seat. Gurney then announced his endorsement of Carswell (as did Florida Governor Claude Kirk) instead of Cramer as had been expected.
