Goodlow-Garey Family Members
Ezra Garey’s life story is a bit of a mystery. Many records have been lost not only to fire but also to other natural disasters. His family story begins around 1848 when Ezra’s grandmother, Georgianna Goodlow, was born in rural Florida. No records have been found to ascertain her exact birthplace. Because Georgianna was African-American, she most certainly witnessed or may have experienced political discrimination while living in Florida after the ratification of the 15th Amendment. Although the 15th Amendment lifted racial restrictions and allowed former slaves the right to vote, many African-Americans remained disenfranchised because of rampant discrimination.
