Charles "Charlie" Garey - Ezra's Younger Brother

Charles Cornelius Garey was born on December 15, 1882, in Milton, Florida. Also known as Charlie, he is Ezra’s younger brother. Charlie and Ezra lived together either with their grandmother or on their own as roommates until Ezra left Pensacola for work in Rhode Island. The brothers worked as stewards on ships that docked in Pensacola Bay. Soon after Ezra moved away, Charlie changed jobs to work as a waiter and then a tailor.

1907 was a pivotal year for Charlie Gary. Ezra died in a shipwreck in Rhode Island in February. A few months later, in October, Charlie married his first wife, Viola. They lived with his grandmother for a brief time before moving to Portland, Oregon. The city directory lists the couple as living in Portland by 1914.

Charlie worked as a boilermaker in the Navy Yard in Portland. Viola died in April 1915 before they had any children together. Charlie married his second wife on December 31, 1915, after moving to King, Washington. By 1920, Charlie and his wife Marie had two daughters and housed ten lodgers in their home. Charlie died the day before his 20th wedding anniversary on December 30, 1935, at only 53 years old.
