Description/Context: | A stand alone editorial cartoon featuring President Lyndon Baines Johnson, being lifted up by his ears, being pulled by the hands of the Vietnam War. On April 28, 1964, Johnson caused an international uproar when he showed reporters that he could lift his two beagles by their ears. When asked why he did that, Johnson replied ‘to make them yowl.’ The resulting press photographs remained a black blot for Johnson among animal lovers, and is the background for Bowden’s cartoon, with the Vietnam War making Johnson “yowl.” |
