Description/Context: Accompanying the Focus page’s Alan Raymond column ‘Austerity, Tax burden, Dim Hope Of Happier Times Face Algerians’ noting the Algerian revolution in 1962 and the problems of moving from French support to independence. The cartoon features an Algerian citizen surrounded by issues (taxes, harsh reality, pull in belts, unhappy times) while the smoke from his gun forms the shape of Charles De Gaulle of France.
