Residents by Occupation

The 1930 Federal Census recorded 30 occupation categories for 99 residents of the Blocks. In comparison to General Labor and the Service Industry, only a small portion of the population worked in highly skilled or educated position. Laborers accounted for over 20% of the employed residents and included general laborers and helpers as well as the skilled labor occupations of carpenters, mortar makers, and lampshade makers. Food and Beverage Services accounted for 16% of individuals, employing Bakers, Cooks, and Dish Washers. Laundresses made up 11% of the employed population while 9% of individuals served in Textile Services including Tailors, Seamstresses, Dressmakers, and Pressers. 7% of individuals were employed in Public Services such as Firemen, Teachers, and Nurses. Additionally, 3% worked in skilled clerical jobs including Clerks and Stenographers. Of the 99 individuals recorded, only one worked as a Printer, Fisherman, or Hair Dresser.
