Throughout the years, the United States government has classified race by different terminology, with some censuses acknowledging mixed races. In the 1940 federal census, the government classified people as either Negro or White. As seen in the above visualization, out of the 129 recorded residents of “the Blocks” area of Belmont-DeVilliers, 110 categorized themselves as Negro with only 19 white residents living there. With 14% white residents in 1940, the number of white residents slightly increased from the 10% white residents in the previous two decades.
