1930s: Residents and Businesses

“The Blocks” of Belmont-DeVilliers had an active community of residents and businesses. Throughout the 1930s the number of businesses increased in the area with the resident numbers decreasing in equal measurement. With the slight decline in residents, more vacant properties became available. This could relate to the economic depression the United States suffered from during the decade. Many people lost their homes during this time and moved out of necessity. The 1940 city directory in this visualization does not match the others because of missing information in the directory itself.
