Data collected from Pensacola’s city directories reveals a mixture of businesses and homes, as well as dwellings serving as both businesses and homes. The 1903 data shows 60 residents living on The Blocks, a slight reduction from the 68 residents recorded from the 1898 directory of the prior decade. While the 1898 directory also indicated 5 businesses operating on The Blocks, the 1903 directory reveals no stand-alone businesses. Five businesses in 1903 operated out of homes.
Entries in all three categories inched upward in 1905 and 1907, but 1908 figures reveal a dramatic drop, particularly in residents, with only 47 residents listed in 1908. This figure is less than half of the number of residents reflected in 1907. The 1909 directory reflects a rebound, with 90 recorded residents, a figure which rose to 110 in 1910. The sharp drop in 1908 inhabitants invites further research into circumstances that may have impacted the neighborhood during that period.
